Monastary Tour and Piñata Workshop

IWC partners with Understand Mexico to bring you a monastary tour combined with a hands on piñata decorating workshop!

‘Tis the season … so we are heading back to the town of Acolman to combine a visit to the nearby Augustinian monastery with a hands-on piñata decorating workshop!

The World associates the piñata with Mexico, while  Mexicans associate the piñata with pre-Christmas holiday parties called Posadas.  Yet actually the concept of the piñata was imported from China via Spain.  It was first adopted in Acolman by a group of monks looking to educate local Indians through pageantry and play.

We will begin our visit at the small yet impressive convent-museum (which can be spotted on the highway to Teotihuacan – looking very much like a medieval fortress and catalogued as just that - a fortress-monastery), before trying our hand at decorating the traditional star shaped papier-mâché piñata.

Join us for an unusual morning out.  Learn a little more about Mexico, and unleash your creative spirit!

NOTE:  There is an entrance fee to the convent and a small symbolic fee for the piñata materials..

When: Thursday December 6th, 10 am to 1 pm.
