Walking Tour of The Zocalo, Mexico's Historic Center

IWC partners with Understand Mexico to bring you a fun walking tour.

Surrounding the Zocalo or main square in Mexico City’s Historic Center are several venues well worth exploring – the National Palace, the Templo Mayor and the Cathedral for starters! The seat of power since pre-hispanic times, the National Palace was originally the site of Emperor Moctezuma's home. Spanish explorer Hernan Cortes began construction of his personal mansion here once the Empire was conquered, which eventually became the address of the many Viceroys who served the Spanish Crown. Today it is the official office of the President.

We will begin our tour in the National Palace where we will see Diego Rivera's murals (considered by many to be his masterpiece), take a stroll through the Botanical Garden, and stopping to get a glimpse at a few of the archaeological windows remaining. From there, we’ll walk half a block to visit the pre-hispanic ruins of the great Templo Mayor (from the outside).  We will end our tour with a stroll through the emblematic Metropolitan Cathedral, also on the main square.

When: Wednesday, October 17, 10 am to 1 pm.

Where: Meeting location will be provided in a separate e-mail closer to the tour date. If you any questions please feel free to contact Lynda Martinez at lyndamartinez@understandmexico.net

A little bit about Casa de Ora:

Fundacion Ora was started by Ora Anekananda in 1999 because of the need she saw in the community of San Fernando.  She had been providing food on an ad hoc basis for children in that community, but soon realized that the Seniors needed help as well.  In partnership with the priest and the Parish, she established a monthly hot meal program held at the Catholic church. What started with 20 seniors now serves 80-100 elderly a month. Ora purchases the food, then with the help of 8-10 volunteers, including people from the International Women’s Club and the Asian Women’s Club,  Ora prepares and serves a 3 course meal to the seniors.  The group celebrates the birthdays of those attending on their birthday month with cake and a small gift. At Christmas, each senior is giving a dispensa and a gift at the Christmas lunch. It is a very happy social occasion with interaction between the seniors and the volunteers.  Ora also provides used clothing, and adaptive equipment like canes and wheelchairs.

If you would like to help out with the Fundacion please see the IWC calendar. We have volunteer opportunities every 3rd Monday of each month.

    Dolores Olmedo Museum

IWC partners with Understand Mexico to bring you a fun walking tour.

Dolores Olmedo was a self-made, savvy business woman and patroness of the arts.  Her ex-hacienda home, “La Noria,” has been converted into an impressive museum exhibiting the largest private collection of easel paintings of her dear friend Diego Rivera and his wife Frida Kahlo.  The grounds of her home remain much as they were when she lived here, with peacocks and hairless dogs wandering the hacienda (the xololxcuintles are descendants of Diego and Frida's pets).

When: Tuesday, November 27, 10 am to 1 pm.

Where: Meeting location will be provided in a separate e-mail closer to the tour date. If you any questions please feel free to contact Lynda Martinez at lyndamartinez@understandmexico.net
